D-day in the Dunes – Spring Walking Festival

Join us for a guided walk to celebrate the military history of the Braunton Burrows.

Crow Point
26th May
10:00am

What to expect:

During World War II the Braunton Burrows provided ideal conditions for assault training by the American and British troops preparing for D-Day. Join Dave Edgcombe, for a fascinating look at Braunton’s important role in the war and how remains of the American’s stay are still a visible part of the area heritage today.

The tour which starts near Crow Point will cover the history of the American Assault Training Centre, looking at the beach obstacles along the foreshore, the American Road, the concrete landing craft used for training and finishing in a hill climb for a panoramic view to observe places of interest.

The guided tour will take around 3 hours and will include walking over sand dunes and uneven terrain. Please wear sensible footwear and walking clothes. It is also advisable to bring a snack and drink of water with you.

About the Guide:

North Devon Coast AONB Project Officer Dave Edgcombe has worked in Countryside Management in and around North Devon for the past 40 years. He once had offices in Braunton Countryside Centre and in 2008 oversaw an ambition interpretation project called Explore Braunton, which led to the development of a popular website with information about Braunton and the surrounding area which this walk will follow.
