Braunton Countryside Centre Facelift Underway

The Braunton Countryside Centre situated in the heart of the North Devon Biosphere Reserve, helps visitors to explore and discover the local coast and countryside through its educational resources, expertise and the activities it undertakes. It recently began a transformation through a first phase of redevelopment works which included a new roof with roof lights and improvements to energy efficiency with fitting of better insulation, LED lighting and a 4kW PV system to generate electricity from the sun.

The Centre built over 25 years ago, was beginning to be a bit tired and dated and the roof was in need of urgent repair. The redevelopment goal of the Centre has been to modernise the building to make it a state of the art information and interpretation centre whilst maximising its benefit to the local community and visitors. The Trustees and volunteers of the Centre have been working hard applying to funders and fundraising to make the project happen. Fortunately, they were successful in receiving money from Fullabrook CIC, the Braunton Parish Council, the Luscott Barton Community Benefit Fund and the Western Power Community Benefit Fund to help with the costs of this initial part of the project.

The inbuilt PV roof system was fitted by local firm RES Devon, local roofing firm Nathan Spice undertook the roofing work and the LED lighting was provided by South West Lighting.

Ken Rutherford Chair of Trustees commented “The Trustees and volunteer team have worked hard to secure the funding we have received so far to help us achieve our aim of making the Centre a viable and attractive building for the future. We have now reached £130,000 of our 160,000 funding target to complete the next phases of the redevelopment project. We have more funding applications to complete and an exciting programme of activities and talks planned to help us fundraise to meet our goal.”

Support A Unique Local Centre To Help Secure Its Future

Braunton Countryside Centre, in the heart of the village is launching a fundraising camText Message Donationpaign with the hope of raising £160,000. It aims to renovate its building and extend opportunities for local people, groups and schools to use the Centre.

It is currently the only environmental education centre in North Devon and attracts around 9000 visitors a year of which about a third are local people. It is an important centre providing information, walks, talks, events and exhibitions about the wildlife, habitats, and the history of Braunton and the wider area of the internationally important UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The Centre which opened in 1986, has managed to remain open thanks to donations and the hard work of local volunteers without the support of any state aid. However, the building is tired and dated and in need of a facelift.

The proposed redevelopment will enclose the porch areas allowing exhibits to be seen from the outside. Also the improved energy efficiency measures and heating will allow winter opening and will offer opportunities for more school visits and evening talks, securing the Centres future.

The Centre is currently applying for local and national funding grants, but is also keen for local people and businesses to help support its fundraising efforts.  If you would like to help please donate:
